Just like the song, rain is a good thing, especially for dried out fields, farmers and Maryland & Virginia's Young Cooperator (YC) Program. Rain showers followed the cooperative's annual YC Summer Break event in Franklin, Tenn. in early July. The weather didn't affect the record attendance of nearly 100 YCs from several states as they toured four dairy farms and capped the evening with a cook-out and hay ride.

- Maryland & Virginia CEO Appointed to USDA Dairy Advisory Committee

Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative is pleased to announce its CEO Jay Bryant has been appointed to serve on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Dairy Advisory Committee.
Announced yesterday by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, the committee is charged with reviewing the issues of farm milk volatility, dairy farmer profitability and consolidation, plus recommending ways USDA can best address the needs of the dairy industry.

- Maryland & Virginia to Offer Five Scholarships

Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative will be offering five $1,000 scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year.
To be eligible applicants must be an employee or relative that is active on a Maryland & Virginia member farm; enrolled in a two or four-year accredited college, university or trade school; and be pursuing a career in the dairy industry.

- Maryland & Virginia Distributes Nearly $2 Million in 13th Check Funds

Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative distributed nearly $2 million in 13th check funds last week to help members make it through one of the worst years dairy farmers have ever faced.
Mailed late last week, this payment represents 10 cents/cwt on milk shipped through the cooperative from January to August.

Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative elected new leadership for 2009, selecting Dwayne Myers of Elkin, N.C., as President, R. Steven Graybeal of Peach Bottom, Pa., as First Vice President and Richard Mosemann from Warfordsburg, Pa., as Second Vice President. The change took place during the Board of Directors reorganization meeting following the cooperative’s Annual Meeting last week at Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center in Ellicott City, Md.

- Maryland & Virginia Generates $7.9 Million in Profits for its Members

Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative announced $7.9 million profits for 2008 at its 89th annual meeting on April 1, 2009 at Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center in Ellicott City, Md. CEO Jay Bryant also reported the cooperative paid out $31 million or approximately $1.125 per hundredweight to members through over-order and various other marketing premiums during the year.

Twenty Maryland & Virginia Young Cooperators (YCs) from seven states explored all that Athens, Ga., the University of Georgia and the Cabaniss Family Dairy in Maxeys, Ga.,

- Maryland & Virginia Members Earn an Extra $4.79 Million

Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers mailed its members more than $4.79 million in extra funds last week.
"After a year of low milk prices and rapidly rising feed costs, we're pleased to be able to share extra money with our members by way of a thirteenth check," said Jay Bryant, Maryland & Virginia's General Manager.
"We know that dairy farmers have been dealing with a difficult economic burden and I'm glad that we can help lighten their load."

- Maryland & Virginia Statement Regarding Membership Status & Quality Standards

Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers has supplied the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area with high quality milk since 1920.
Today Maryland & Virginia has 1,500 dairy farm families dedicated to supplying the cooperative and its customers with the highest quality milk possible.
The cooperative maintains marketing agreements with each member, requiring the member to comply with state and local regulations as well as Maryland & Virginia's quality and grade standards.
When a member fails to meet these standards, the cooperative has no choice but to terminate his marketing agreement.
